Engineering Open House, 1999

EOH is happening tomorrow and Saturday. Please come. It's looking really cool. Right now I'm live at DCL (the UIUC Computer Science building, you could live here) and ACM and it's SIGs are setting up shop all over the place. It's amazing. Also check out my team as we compete in the Jerry Sanders Design Competition.

Where do I begin?

I have 4GB of Depeche Mode thanks to Caroline (who deserves no link since she has yet to move her page to a decent location). I love it. I can listen to it over and over and over and every once in a while I here a non Mode song.

Apparently I won 100 free laser printings at CCSO labs for filling out a survey. Which is all cool. Also, people who are under ews have 600 pages of printing free as well (which makes sense).

So yeah, I work for the department of Curriculum and Instruction for the Chickscope Project. I've attended two meetings. The last one was a four hour class. It was all cool. I think I'll have fun at this job. Unfortunately the web server I get to use is a Macintosh. It's alright though, I can do anything.

The Chemical Brothers is an amazing group. Listen to the song Where do I begin. It's very soothing and makes you think, "Wow, this is Chemical Brothers?"

I got a hair cut. By description it's been approved by Molly. It's at a length where I don't really need to do too much to comb my hair. Although, after spring break or something, it's going to be a shorter cut so I never have to comb.

I was supposed to go the ISA semi-formal yesterday, but my date was sick. I really didn't care one way or another if I went. It was just something to do. Instead I got physics done. Molly was a 'witness' to this.

That's all the Dave you need for now...

I discovered Gausss theorem: n(n+1)/2 on my own. I wanted to see if I could add up some numbers on my calculator to get 666 (this was in eighth grade when Satan was cool). So I was adding stuff up to 36 and got it. It was somewhat tedious and I needed to figure a way to check my work. Well I discovered something equivalent to n(n+1)/2 that worked. I didnt prove it. I just tried it a lot and it worked. I never thought much of it until a few years back when it was relevant to my course work. I thought it was kinda cool. So you see Satan inspires people to do math. Calculators enable anybody to do math.

You have tow wonder what drives me to the "Math" portion of "Math/CS" (my major). It felt nice when one of the heads of the math department (I believe it was actually the head of Undergraduate Mathematics) says "We don't see a lot of [Math/CS students] here." You know something is flawed when pure research isn't justified with the glass buildings. The application of mathematics and the sciences, however, is a wonderland. I refer to Computer Science, the other half of my major. DCL is this wonderfully renovated building while Altgeld is this chaotic building where the height of the floor changes and everything is "all weird and shit." This makes mathematics an unappealing major. Fortunately the love of mathematics can make "all weird and shit" a good thing. Math is an incredible subject. There's so much to learn and it all stays the same. C S is similar, but Math is everywhere. It's in the machines. It's in the music. It's in the science. I appreciate that. I appreciate the math opportunities with which I have been presented and with those that surround me. When people see that I'm a C S major they know or think they know everything about me. When I say I'm a math major they think I'm "all weird and shit." Which is nicer than being called the "computer guru" all the time.

Im expressing my dominance in Math 247 since Im the only one who talks.

I lost my Parker pen. (Parker, like Peter Parker!) Have you seen it? Its green.

Ive started to be more aware of making fun of people. I mean, my brother said it best, if he makes fun of you, he likes you. If he didnt like you, hed just remain quiet. Which is more or less the case now. I do that a lot. Its only when I think Im at a comfort level with someone where Ill joke around with them. As of late most people take things too seriously.

Maybe its the Y2k thing. The Y2k is coming and that means Armageddon. That also means use your last year wisely and say what you mean. Take things seriously. Of course, I also run into the problem where people dont take me seriously when I am being serious. There are also the few that know exactly when Im being serious with them. Im fairly consistent with them and they can pick up the few times I am not serious.

I have this wild idea that population growth will lead to creating a Galactic Empire. Countries with large populations are unstable. So, rather than let the growth lead to internal strife, people will support colonizing the moon and Mars and whatever else on which we can create an artificial environment.

There are so many people who hate life. I think Stinky is one of them (he said so or something once). Hating life is dumb. Well it seems dumb. Im a mathemagician so Ill think about in terms of mathematics. Life may suck at a given moment (bad day, depression or whatever), but you can always make a change to make your quality of life get better. Eventually as long as your life is getting better it will all end up being good eventually. So as long as life is getting better for you or you have the potential to make it as such, you should like life in general. Chances are though, that you do like life at least just enough to keep yourself committing suicide. Skys life wouldnt be so bad if he wasnt such a freak who played video games all day.

No, I did not pull an all-nighter. I actually wake up this early.

Eric's Treasure Trove of Mathematics (CRC Treasure Trove) which deserves no hyperlinking now only features entries that begin with 10 randomly selected letters (selected daily). It's quite annoying, but understandable as it is a ploy to sell his book through the CRC press. Unfortunately it makes the Internet a cheap substitute for reality.

I've been spending hideous ammounts of money and I have no job to compensate. The money is spent on random things like food and other things. So this week I'll begin my job and good things will occur. Luckily, my friend, the "Coupon Bitch," who spends a lot of money, mostly on food, has not had her bad habbits rub off on me, yet.

Mike and I were talking about the future. I mentioned how living in Allen makes me want to always live in an apartment or condo. All your friends could be a door or two away from you and whatnot. Eventually we got to thinking about how wierd it would be if Mike, Fred (Eric), Neal, Caroline and I all lived on the same street. It would be like Mr. Roger's neighborhood (Fred would be Mr. Rogers). We ended up deciding on something else as a realistic goal. We'd buy large cabins. We thought one in Florida or California or someplace coastal would be cool and one somewhere out in the middle of the woods. I'm all for that, and am very determined to bring this dream a reality. With the shared cabins we could all bring our families and party together at the beach or in the middle of the woods. The future is cool.

Pakistan and India have finally met. They both vow to resolve disputes. This is nice. It's too disturbing though that because of these talks there have been many protests on both sides by radicals. In disputed Kashmir there has been several deaths too.

Score 1 for Dave Dash, 0 for Calvin Klein.

Jack got a joy stick the other day. It's as large as his PSX. It's kinda neat, but it's loud when he plays it. I am getting better at collecting my things and just leaving the room, but it isn't nearly as bad as last semester when he'd never study.

I didn't solve a problem in time and failed to obtain a triple for next year for Mike, Neal and I. So next year I'll be living across the hall in room 455 and my phone number will be one less, I believe (It's 3-DADDY-0 now). I'll be rooming with Mike. Neal will live in the same place 2 doors away with a friend of his.

I saw Waterboy at the Illini Union with Juj. It's a pretty funny movie and well worth it for $2. They also played Block Rockin Beats from the Chemical Brothers as well as Tom Sawyer from Rush. They had the sound messed up in the movie though with Tom Sawyer. You could barely tell the music was there. I wish IUB would show movies as often as Molly's school does.

So today I got to sleep late :( Jack and Josh's fault really. I however was also awakened in the morning. I heard some whispering and I was like... great Jack is talking in his sleep again. Not so, I found out that he's whispering along to his CDs. I finally got back to sleep, and when I woke up at the usual 6:30, I noticed Jack tossing and turning and muttering in Chinese. freak.

Dave is going back to Minnesota... maybe for good :(

Read this carefully before jumping to conclusions. Last year over spring break the University of Illinois held a reception for Minnesotan's who were accepted to the U of I. I went and I decided that I did like this school. Also present were Jawed Karim and David Kam. They were residents of a program called Unit One/Allen Hall. So I signed up for this, because they made it seem like something I'd be interested in. This year I met both people and became pretty good friends with Jawed and acquainted with Dave. Dave is now transferring to the University of Minnesota. He leaves tomorrow. I found out about this today, which is somewhat disconcerting. I don't like it when someone leaves. It's also someone who made me decide on this hall in particular.

Today some of 4 North and friends through a party for him. It was a lot of fun. We sprayed him down with silly string when he came into the Allen Hall Main Lounge. We played a game of crab ball which ended up displacing parts of Allen Hall's lounge. The game was fun nonetheless. The lounge is a nice place to hang out with a large group of people. I like it. At least I'll get to see Dave over break which will be nice.

Note to Caroline: I have a ton of more updates that I will do later. I have a text file of notes, and I have a legal pad filled with journalish entries and whatnot. It's all going to eventually be ported to the web-journal. You're still the best.

Freedom... coming soon this week.

Patch Adams

Just so I can say, you heard it here first:

Patch Adams will be opening the Gesundheit Institute after recieving $125 Million in grants from organizations. I guess this was very recent, as in a few days ago. He announced it Monday and I assume also on Sunday. It should be in the news in a few days.

More updates to come when I get a minute.

old stuff

Okay, I've just found these two paragraphs somewhere that should be posted I guess...

This Friday I went to Culture Shock, a multicultural event at the Illini Union. It was pretty good. I was kinda tired and wasn't really their with anybody in particular. I went their with Neal and Fal' who later left for a semi-formal and then I came back to Allen Hall.

Saturday I went shopping at Meijer. I got a free knife and I beat Mike to finding a caller ID box. Caller ID Box? That's right... We had to go find a caller ID box and the person who brought it back to the 107.1 radio station guy got a to choose a CD. So I got a CD from VAST. Which I would have ordered from Columbia House otherwise. I like the CD. It has the song Touched on it.

This is very wierd... I guess those things fit in somewhere with the Dave Dash timeline. I have like several sheets of notes that I have from my legal pad that should go in the journal too. It's interesting I guess.
